By Jim T. Hand Mark Levin has written an educational, thought provoking, and eye-opening book. First,it educates throughout the book. It is sprinkled with the thinking of the Founding Fathers, especially in regards to the Constitution and conservatism. Other great conservative minds are explored.
Second, the book is thought provoking as Mr. Levin uses a contrast of conservative thinking vs. the modern liberal who he calls
"statist." Topics include states' rights, faith,Stephenie Meyer, the free market, federalism, and self-preservation. One can clearly see that what statist
consider liberty is actually tyranny.
Third, the book is eye-opening because there are shocking and frightening chapters. These chapters reveal how the statist will twist, ignore, hide, and lie about facts to promote their liberal agenda. Especially, eye-opening are the chapters on immigration, the welfare states, and the environment. One must read to believe!
Mr. Levin ends with an epilogue on the "Conservative Manifesto." It gives conservatives hope, but there is a sense of urgency as he concludes
with "we conservatives need to get busy." Related Articles:

The best explanation of conservative values ever
By Darwin R. TeagueI just finished reading this book and it is without a doubt the best book I've read on conservative subjects. Mark covers all of the important subjects and gives a very good explanation of the Constitution. If you only buy one book this year, BUY THIS BOOK. Related Articles:

I've read the founding fathers and Mark Levin is no founding father
By Paul J. GaffneyThe author has a clear point of view but, instead of claiming it as his own, he cloaks it in the divine veil of the Levin-deified founding fathers. I have no issue with a partisan author making a point - and Levin has a point to make - but you can only claim to be a god if asked (cf. Ghostbusters). The core theme of the book seems to be: this is what the "founding fathers" did, so this is what is right. Setting aside the manifold problems associated with selective reporting of the founding fathers inferred intent, the topics dealt with in this book are more nuanced than the black and white portrait painted. So long as extremists continue to treat our national dialogue about the role of government and the nature of the good society as a binary universe with a collection of rights and wrongs (with the two poles inevitably having contradictory and irreconcilable view about what falls in which column) we will fail to make meaningful progress toward marshalling our nation's formidable resources toward better ends. We would be better off understanding what is going on instead of attempting to name "right" and "wrong." Related Articles:

Dark Days for America
By E. J. LudwigThis book is excellent. He uses the word "Statist" to describe the opponent of the Conservative. For many reasons this is better than using fascist, liberal fascist, leftist, liberal, Socialist, or Communist. Although I still reserve the right to use "Neo-Marxist" I think "Statist" is an apt term that puts the focus where it ought to be. He always uses originalist instead of "strict constructionist" which I think points to the importance of keeping an historical perspective when talking about Constitutional interpretive positions. His case for the shift away from federalism is pretty compelling, and I finished the book believing that now "states rights" is pretty much moot. When I observed a few years ago that there was almost no opposition to No Child Left Behind despite the 10th Amendment locating control over education in the states, I began to see that federalism was pretty much over. M. Levin's book confirms this, as he describes the states now as pretty much appendages of the Federal Government. Having proved this conclusively, I don't see how at the end of the book he can call for the abolition of the U.S. Department of Education. That was a great issue fifteen years ago, but how can it be applicable today if what he says in other parts of the book are true?
I came away from the book feeling pessimistic about Conservative causes. He marshals so much evidence of the march of Statism that one feels that Conservatism has been pretty much steam-rolled over the past 100 years, R. Reagan notwithstanding.
